On the evening of January 7, the final ofthe 4th "SCGC Group Cup" Graduate Debate Competition of Xi'anJiaotong University was held in the Star Report Hall of Qian Xuesen Library.The debate competition was jointly organized by School of Energy and Power Engineering,School of Public Policy and Administration, School of Chemical Engineering andTechnology as well as Society of Thought and Debate. More than 80 graduatestudents were attracted to form 15 teams to participate in the competition.After 13 rounds of fierce competition in the preliminary, quarter-final andsemi-final competitions, two teams successfully entered the final.
Mr. Jack, Chief Operating Officer of SCGCGroup, He Maogang, Secretary of the Party Committee of School of Energy andPower Engineering, Wang Lijian, Deputy Secretary of the Party Committee ofSchool of Public Policy and Administration, Zhang Yanpeng, Wei Na, Deputy Secretaryof the Party Committee of the University and Liu Yuan, Executive Coach of theDebate Team of Xi'an Jiaotong University, were invited to serve as guestjudges.
Eight "Best Debaters" from thethird Debate Competition and the current Debate Competition first brought awonderful performance contest to the others. There is a fierce contest betweenthe two sides on "senior female schoolmate (male)/junior female schoolmate(male) is more suitable for being the lover". In the course of the debate,the delegation of the side who support this view set out from reality and usedprofound theory to explain many advantages of "falling in love with seniorfemale schoolmate (male)" in simple language with clear organization andsharp words. And the opposing team is not reluctant to concede. Instead, theyexpressed concise and rigorous elaboration of their own point of view, quickthinking, commanding momentum. The two contestants quoted a great many classicsand used witty words, which aroused applause from the audience.
The final was between the team titled"Turbulence around Cylinder with Low Reynolds Number" and theopposition titled "You're all right." It was debated that when wecommunicate with others, should we say "what I want to say" or"what he wants to hear". First of all, the first argument of thesupporting side elaborates the beneficial influence of the opinion "what Iwant to say" in communication from the aspects of informationtransmission, effective and reasonable communication, which was meticulousthinking and sufficient arguments. Then, the opposing side firstly refutes theargument of the supporting side, and analyses the advantages of "sayingwhat others want to hear when communicating" one by one. It argues on thebasis of the reason and strikes the main points directly. In the later stage ofoffensive debate and free debate, the two sides are fiercely competing witheach other to present their own views. The intense competition gave full playto the eloquence and adaptability of the debaters. On the stage, the audience'senthusiasm was ignited by good sentences from time to time.
After discussion and careful scoring of thejudges, the team "Turbulence around a cylinder with low Reynoldsnumber" won the Debate and the title of the "Best Debater" waswon by Wang Jianan, a number of the supporting side. Mr. LiuYuan made adetailed comment on the performance of both sides. And he analyzed theshortcomings of both sides in the formation of logical structure and the selectionof cases. The comment was penetrating, which was unanimously recognized by allcontestants. At the same time, on behalf of Society of Thought and Debate, Mr.Liu Yuan expressed his thanks to the SCGC Group for sponsoring and supportingdebate activities of students for many years. What’s more, he also discoveredseveral good debaters who could be well trained in the future to representXi'an Jiaotong University to participate in the national contest on spot.
At the end of the award ceremony, Mr. Jack,Chief Operating Officer of SCGC Group, made a concluding speech. He appreciatedthe players' passion and charm for speculation. He gave his own understandingand suggestions on the understanding of the debate. He encouraged the presentpeople as postgraduates majoring in science and engineering not only to doscientific research steadfastly and rigorously, but also to cultivatedialectical viewpoints to treat problems effectively. Expressing our own viewsin a reasonable way in the future will have better performance in theworkplace.
Since 2015, SCGC Group has establishedcontacts with the School of Energy and Power Engineering, Xi'an JiaotongUniversity, and has carried out a number of exchanges and cooperation inproduction, education and research. From the summer vacation of2015, SCGC Grouphas been awarded the summer social practice base of Xi'an Jiaotong University.The global remote monitoring center of SCGC Group in Henan Province willwelcome the students and teachers of Xi'an Jiaotong University for three consecutive summer vacations. During the one-week summer practice activities,we have arranged a variety of business visits, seminars and sports for thestudents, aiming to provide students with more intimate contact with enterprises.SCGC Group has continued to sponsor four debates, and our original purpose isthat the students tend to calm introversion and poor eloquence. We hope that wecan make the public change their stereotyped impression of students majoring inscience and engineering and create a stage for them to show their speculativedemeanor through encouraging students to give full play to their excellentlogical thinking ability and actively exercise their expressive ability.
